Sustainability is the cornerstone of Walsh Whiskey Distillery’s long-term vision and has been key to the development of our distillery at Royal Oak. We constantly seek to track, maintain and improve our performance in areas such as water usage, energy efficiency, community engagement and employee well-being . We believe participation in Origin Green is the next step in demonstrating our commitment to sustainability. Our Origin Green plan runs from 2017 to 2021, with the first year’s objective being the review of operations to date, providing bench-marking data. Followed by a focus on improved efficiencies.

Our company sustainability actions centre around raw material sourcing, manufacturing, biodiversity and social responsibility.

In the area of raw material sourcing, we will ensure that at least half of our ingredients suppliers will have recognized sustainability certifications by 2021, along with 20% of all other suppliers. We will also improve recycling by 10% in 2021, using 2017 as a benchmark.

Resource efficiency in manufacturing is a priority at Walsh Whiskey Distillery, with heat recovery system and utility pumps ensuring optimum energy management. The limited waste and by-products from the distilling process are reused as animal feed.

In the area of biodiversity, as we develop our distillery’s surrounding site, we aim to ensure that it is pollinator friendly. This will be achieved through maintaining areas of longer grass length, creating shelters for nesting and planting window boxes.

Social responsibility is also a priority for Walsh Whiskey Distillery, we are committed to our employees and playing our part in the local community. This is expressed in several ways including increased investment in staff training and development and staff health and nutritional programmes. We also support the cycle to work scheme. We provide sponsorship and funding of selected local charities, events and initiatives, such as a bursary for the Brewing and Distilling course at IT Carlow.
